About the Book

The climb of a thousand steps—one three-line, seventeen-syllable haiku at a time.

“I’d like to do something creative this morning, but I’m not sure what that is. Write a little something. Even a poem.”

So began this “idea with barely a pulse,” as Elizabeth Gilbert (Big Magic) would say, which became an experiment, then a practice. In a time when other creative pursuits felt far out of reach, that haiku practice became a daily companion on the trek across many landscapes—natural, spiritual, emotional—toward some destination deep in the (still) unknown.

The Thousandfold Stair is a collection of haiku, drawn from more than 1,000 composed over a year-long journey, accompanied by author notes and essays. It deals with themes of grief and loss, memory loss/dementia, creativity and craft, and faith, among others.

About the Author

Steve Arensberg writes stories (and now poetry, it seems!) to cultivate a sense of wonder (for the reader and himself): stories with a sense of magic and mystery, with worlds you can get lost in, characters you love (or love to hate), and stories that carry you along on a current of powerful emotion. “More wonder, please,” says Elizabeth Gilbert in Big Magic (a favorite book on writing)—and that’s exactly what Steve hopes his work brings to you, the reader.
